Region boundaries, admninistrative boundaries - NUTS-2 level





General information

There are two RRG NUTS-2 Region Boundary layers available: the 1995 version and the actual version. Although the 1995 NUTS-2 version layer is in a way outdated, it is still useful because the centroids of the road and rail networks refer to this version. However, the actual NUTS-2 layer already incorporated latest adjustments to the system of regions as published by Eurostat.

The NUTS-2 region layer consists of 1,445 arcs and 862 polygons, representing 290 different NUTS-2 regions or regions equivalent to the NUTS-2 level. A full list of NUTS-2 regions according to the 1995 NUTS-2 region system can be found here. It is worth to mention that this list does not fully correspond to the latest NUTS-2 coverage, however, the 1995 NUTS-2 system of regions is the basis for the node numbering schemes of the various networks as described in other sections of this database description. The region number of the node attributes NODEID1 and NODEID2 of the network layers refer to the region numbers shown in column 2 of this table. Moreover, the centroids of the road and railway networks correspond to the centroids also indicated in this table.

The size of the regions at each level varies considerably depending on the member state. Regional information, such as socio-economic data from Eurostat´s REGIO database, can be linked to the regions via the unique region code. The main features of the NUTS2 coverage are:

Detailed description of the arc attribute table

The AAT of the NUTS2 coverage contains only one user-defined attribute. The classification of the BOUNDARY attribute can be used to select and draw different types of boundaries, if required. Since the NUTS system is a hierarchical system, all higher level boundaries represent at the same time also a lower level boundary. For example, a country boundary is at the same time always a NUTS-1 region boundary, and all NUTS-1 region boundaries are at the same time NUTS-2 region boundaries.

Detailed description of the polygon attribute table

The PAT of the NUTS2 coverage contains the following user-defined attributes:

The attributes COUNTRY, NUTS1_CODE and NUTS2_CODE represent the official ISO codes as defined and used by Eurostat for the respective NUTS levels. These codes can be used both to join statistical data to the layer and to aggregate NUTS-2 regions to higher levels.

NUTS2_NAME gives the official NUTS-2 region name, whereas NUTS2TOTAREA represents the total NUTS-2 region area. This attribute should not be confused with the ArcInfo internal area attribute, which represents the area of the individual polygon in question. In contrast, NUTS2TOTAREA represents the total region area, i.e. if the region consists of several polygons, the areas of all polygons are summed up in this attribute.
