Activity 1: Spatial Planning and Spatial Research - Projects

Quality of Life in European Regions (1996 - 2003)

A Multi-Criteria Analysis

Client:  European Commission, 4th, 5th and 6th RTD Programme
Partner:  Institute for Spatial Planning at University of Dortmund (IRPUD) (Dortmund)

This project aimed to develop and calculate an indicator for the quality of life in European regions. It was par of two greater projects, SASI and IASON, where this type of indicator was integrated as one of the explaining variables of a regional simulation model for simulating regional development over time. This indicator was specifically designed to determine migration decisions of households and retired people, to answer questions like “where are older wealthy people likely to move after their retirement?”. The first set of indicators was developed during the SASI project for NUTS 2 level regions, whereas the second set of indicators was developed during the IASON project for NUTS 3 level regions. The indicator is a composite indicator generated through multi-criteria analysis (MCA), taking account of temperature, average daily sunshine duration, rainfall, elevation, relief energy, percentage of open space, percentage of areas dedicated for tourism, number of attractive historical towns and villages, as well as length and availability and quality of shores. The quality-of-life-indicators calculated for NUTS 2 and NUTS-3 regions are part of the overall RRG GIS Database, section interaction data and regional data, and can be ordered upon request. A summary of the indicator calculation can be found here. A comprehensive working paper can be downloaded in pdf format from the webpage of the Institute of Spatial Planning (IRPUD).
