Value-added in renewable energy sector (2014 - 2015)

Study on total value added by renewable energies in Mecklenburg Vorpommern

Client:  SPD Parliamentary Group Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Schwerin)
Partner:  HIE-RO (Hanseatic Institute for Entrepreneurship and Regional Development) (Rostock)

Under coordination of the Hanseatic Institute for Entrepreneurship and Regional Development at the University of Rostock (HIE-RO), RRG is involved in a study exploring possible guidelines for a future energy policy in the country MV.
Climate change, including rising global greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the limitations of the stocks of fossil fuels required a shift to a sustainable energy supply. On behalf of the SPD parliamentary group, the HIE-RO Institute and RRG currently develop a (georeferenced) data base which will form a foundation for the development of guidelines for future energy policy in the state of MV.
Both for the analysis of current developments, but especially in view of a strategic direction for future energy policy in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, it is necessary to create an appropriate data base based on primary data and to develop a methodology for a permanent monitoring.
In search of sustainable value chains, the project identified current developments in the energy sector including wind, bioenergy, solar, hydro and geothermal energy. The core of the work is to investigate precisely the structures of an import independent production of renewable energy and its direct and indirect effects (inputs such material supplies and services, creating new jobs in the state).
The aim of the study is to take stock of jobs and the determination of the value of companies that are active in the renewable energy sector. In this case, only companies should be recorded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, producing components and sub-components and services, and offering services for the plant and its operation. These are in particular the operations of the industrial and commercial sector as well as specialized services and craft enterprises in the country. Information on products and services provide for the development of the renewable energy sector are collected and described.
To analyze the value chains an approach is implemented, which estimates not only income and value-added effects quantitatively, but also accounts for corporate and spatial structures based upon the georeferenced location of companies and branches. With this approach, spatial clusters and network structures are made visible, as a starting point for the political debate and to form a foundation for the targeted promotion of environmental technologies on site.
RRG is responsible for the georeferencing of companies and locations, for the construction of spatial database, for performing spatial analysis and eventually for all cartographic works in this project.
