The main objective of the project is to make an assessment on the socio-economic impacts of the extremely low population density, peripherality and cold climate in the Northern regions of Sweden and Finland, including East Finland. Sub-tasks within this project are:
- to collect available data from different sources on the impacts of the extreme sparse population, low accessibility and cold climate to regional development in Northern Europe
- to describe in a 10-year perspective the demographic trends, evolution of labour markets and structural changes in economic activities
- to calculate in a European perspective the degree of accessibliity of the Northern extremely sparsely populated regions
- to assess the extra costs related to provision of public services and infrastructures
- to compile these results into one single summary report.
The main concern of RRG is first of all the delineation of the sparsely populated areas based on 1x1 km grid; furthermore, RRG is responsible for the analysis of the transport sector, the calculation of accessibility and peripherality indicators and the analysis of the infrastructure supply in these regions. Lastly, RRG is also responsible for the description of the natural situation with respect to terrain and climate.
