Speeds at railway sections

On behalf of DG Regio of the European Commission RRG generated a new geodataset on actual railway speeds, based on actual rail timetables, as input to the forthcoming 5th Cohesion Report of the European Commission. Similar datasets or publications often focus on the maximum design speeds of a railway section, however, in daily operation such maximum speeds are rarely reached. Instead, the acutal speeds reached according to the timetables are much lower. The generated dataset takes account of different train services such as high-speed trains, intercity trains or slow regional trains, operating along the same section.
