Travel time matrices Germany
02/23/2009
The Ifo Institute, Munich, commissioned RRG to calculate road and rail travel times between all German municipalities for 2001 and 2005, as well as to calculate the average distance of each municipality to the next motorway ramp, again for the two years of 2001 and 2005. All calculations will be based upon the RRG GIS Database, that already comprised codings of the road and rail transport networks for past years (starting in the early 1970ies). The calculation of the average distance of each municipality to the next motorway ramp will be based on a raster approach, where each municipality will be rasterized and the distance of each raster cell will bve calculated. In a second step the average distance for each municipality will then be derived. This approach particularly takes account of the specific situation of municipalities with a great territory, where the average distance yields more realistic results as if only the distance from any city center would be generated.
