ESPON TRACC: Transport Accessibility at Regional/Local Scale and Patterns in Europe (2010 - 2012)

Client:  ESPON Coordination Unit (Luxembourg)
Partners:  Charles University of Prague (Prague), Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization, Polish Academy of Science (Warsaw), Mcrit (Barcelona), S&W Urban and Regional Research (S&W) (Dortmund), TRT Trasporti e Territorio (Milano), University of Oulu (Oulu)

The ESPON TRACC project aims at taking up and updating the results of existing studies on accessibility at the European, national and regional scale, to extend the range of accessibility indicators by further indicators responding to new policy questions, to extend the spatial resolution of accessibility indicators and to explore the likely impacts of policies at the European and national scale to improve global, European and regional accessibility in the light of new challenges, such as globalisation, energy scarcity and climate change.
The main innovation in this project is the ambition to calculate all accessibility indicators on a raster basis (resolution < 1x1 km). Indicators include, but are not limited to, travelt ime/accessibility to cities, airports, railway stations, hospitals, secondary schools, freight villages, and other facilities.
RRG is not only responsible for providing the necessary transport network database for the various calculations, including excerpts of actual rail timetables, based upon the RRG GIS Database, but is also involved in the calculation of European-wide accessibility indicators, as well as in conducting regional case studies in the Baltic States, analysing regional accessibility patterns in such peripheral areas.
