RRG GIS Database


General information - General database description

The RRG GIS Database actually builds upon and is a direct successor of the IRPUD GIS database of trans-European transport networks by mutual agreement between RRG and IRPUD. The starting point for the development of the IRPUD GIS database dates back to the late 1980ies. Since then IRPUD maintained and continuously further developed this database specifically adjusted to applications and analysis at the national and European scales. The IRPUD GIS Database was used in several (research) projects for various purposes. Inter alia, in 1996/1997 Eurostat/GISCO licenced the IRPUD road and rail networks, so they became the nucleus for the GISCO transport networks.

Therefore, the RRG GIS Database is gaining 15 years of experience in database development and design. The RRG GIS Database is fully compatible with the IRPUD GIS database (i.e. different versions of these database can be linked and merged back and forth), and is also to some extend compatible with the GISCO road and rail networks.

The RRG GIS Database is subdivided into the following branches:

  • transport networks

  • regions and administrative boundaries

  • geography layers

  • interaction data and regional data



In general, the RRG GIS Database covers 38 European countries: All countries of the EU-15; the new EU member states Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia; the two other candidate countries Bulgaria and Romania, as well as the remaining European countries Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Iceland, Macedonia, Moldova, Norway, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. As regards Russia, Ukraine and Turkey, only those parts of the countries being part of the European continent are included in the database, whereas its Asian parts are excluded.

RRG is aiming at providing the most up-to-date state of the database as possible. However, RRG cannot give any warranty on the actual state, in particular with respect to the most recent developments.

As further described on this webpage, each GIS layer of the database comes along with a certain set of attributes, providing basic characteristics of the objects. Despite their different characteristics, one common feature of all layers of the RRG GIS Database is that the same kind of information is stored in the same attributes. For instance, the ISO country code assigned to each node of the different transport networks is always stored in an attribute called COUNTRY or COUNTRY1. Similarly, a user defined node number for all nodes of the transport networks is always stored in an attribute called NODEID1. This principle should help the user to understand the database structure and thus help to easily explore the different layers.

The RRG GIS Database is not only subdivided into different branches, but the branches are further subdivided into different layers. For example, each mode of the transport networks and each level of the administrative boundaries are available as individual layers in the database. In general, the database is maintained in form of individual coverages of ESRI’ s ArcInfo/ArcGIS.
