Activity 1: Spatial Planning and Spatial Research - Projects

Supply Quality of the Retail Sector – A Modelling Approach (1999 - 2000)

Client:  own research

Starting point for this project was the development of a microscopic simulation model for the assessment of the supply quality of the retail sector, based on the general Huff model. The simulation model developed calculates the supply quality for each residence building individually, as a function of the distances to the shops and the size and attractiveness of the shops. The distances are weighted subject to the different modes. This simulation model has been applied to the district of Hombruch, which is part of the city of Dortmund. The model determines, from the point of view of the customers and inhabitants, the service level of the shops in the district seen from each residence, and so enables to identify areas that are served better and areas that are suffering from the supply level in a small scale approach. The model can also be used to determine shopping probabilities for each pair of residence buildings and shops. The micro-scale simulation model is designed in a way to be applied to any region, and district and any spatial level. Selected model results are published as the IRPUD working paper 167. A summary of the findings is also available in pdf format (600 KB).
